How To Play Who Was Alive When I Was Born
There are two ways to play, and you can switch between them with the buttons at the top.
Explore a year. Type the year you were born and press Show who was alive. You get a list of every famous person on our list who was alive that year. Each row shows their life as a gray bar on a timeline, with a green section for the years they shared with you. You can also see how old they turned that year.
Use the chips to show only scientists, musicians, athletes or other groups. Switch the sort to Most years shared to see who stuck around the longest after you arrived. A βJust missed youβ box lists people who died in the 15 years before your birth year.
Play the quiz. You get 10 questions like βWas Jane Austen alive when Charles Dickens was born?β Tap Yes or No, or press Y or N on a keyboard. After each answer, a mini timeline shows both lives and a dashed line marks the birth year in the question.
What Your Score Means
In explore mode, your number is how many of our 186 famous people were alive in your birth year. The list leans toward the last 200 years, so a more recent year usually means more names on your list. It is not a contest, just a fun way to picture your place in history.
In quiz mode, you score one point per correct answer, out of 10:
- 9 or 10: you have a timeline in your head. Impressive.
- 6 to 8: solid history skills, with a few sneaky overlaps catching you out.
- 5 or less: history is full of surprises. Play again with new questions.
Tips To Improve
- Think in lifetimes, not eras. People often lived longer than you expect. Queen Victoria lived from 1819 to 1901, so she was alive for the first 22 years of Albert Einsteinβs life (born 1879).
- Watch for same-year twins. Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were both born in 1809. Shakespeare and Cervantes both died in 1616.
- Remember the short lives. Mozart died at 35 and Anne Frank at 15. These quick lives make tricky questions.
- Look at the mini timeline after each answer. Seeing the bars side by side helps the dates stick.
Fun Facts About Overlapping Lives
Some overlaps sound impossible. Benjamin Franklin (1706 to 1790) was alive when Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769, and Napoleon was alive when Charles Darwin was born in 1809. Three people, but they connect more than a century of history.
Some years are packed with famous births. Anne Frank, Martin Luther King Jr. and Audrey Hepburn were all born in 1929. PelΓ©, Bruce Lee and John Lennon were all born in 1940.
