How To Play the Password Game

You start with an empty box and one simple request: choose a password. As soon as you type, the first rule appears. Make it happy and the next rule pops up, then the next, and so on.

Each rule sits in its own card. A green card means you are following that rule. A red card means you are breaking it. The red ones always float to the top so you can see what needs fixing. Every rule keeps getting checked while you type, so a change you make for rule 20 can suddenly break rule 5.

The early rules are easy, like using a number or a capital letter. Then things get mathy, and then things get strange. You will need moon emoji, planets, fruits, laughs and a dinosaur, all squeezed into one password. When all 28 rules are green, you type the whole thing again to confirm it, and you win.

What Your Score Means

Your score is the time it took you from your first key press to the moment you confirmed your password. The clock keeps running while you think, so planning ahead pays off.

  • Under 5 minutes: lightning fast. You probably planned your password like a chess move.
  • 5 to 15 minutes: a really solid run. You hit a few walls and climbed over them.
  • 15 to 30 minutes: you fought for it. Some of those late rules are sneaky.
  • Over 30 minutes: you never gave up, and that still counts as a win.

Your fastest time is saved in your browser as your personal best.

Tips To Improve

  • Read the late rules before you lock in early choices. Some words you pick near the start will cause trouble later. Choose short words with as few letters as you can get away with.
  • Keep your digits in one place. The digit total rule is easier to manage when all of your numbers sit next to each other at the end.
  • Use the emoji helper. It has every moon phase and both dinosaurs, so you never have to hunt for them.
  • Watch the character count. One rule needs a prime number length. The counter in the corner of the box helps you add or remove a single letter to fix it.

Fun Facts About Passwords

Real passwords work best when they are long and hard to guess, not when they include planets and fruit. Many security experts suggest using a password manager and a different password for every site.

The idea of a password is very old. Guards in ancient armies used secret words to tell friend from stranger at night. Those words were short and easy to say out loud. Yours, after this game, will be neither of those things.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rules are in the password game?

There are 28 rules, plus a final step where you type your password a second time. Each new rule only shows up once every rule before it is happy.

How do I type emoji on a computer?

Tap the Emoji helper button under the password box. It shows the moon phases, dinosaurs and a few other emoji you can insert with one click, so you do not need an emoji keyboard.

Why did a rule that was green turn red again?

Every rule is checked again each time your password changes. Adding something for a new rule can break an old one, like adding a number that throws off your digit total. Some rules also depend on the clock, so the hour rule can change while you play.

How does the game know the moon phase?

It works it out from the date using the average length of a moon cycle, which is about 29.5 days. The rule even tells you the name of tonight's phase so you can pick the right emoji.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser. Your password is never saved or sent to anyone, and only your fastest time is stored on your device.
